stock mufflers are used with a resonator also. It doesn't sound like you would be up for welding up your own. a resonator could be welded in but it would prob be more more expsensive than just replacing the muffler. As for quieting it slightly and voiding raspiness and giving you the option to choose your own tailpipe, the Cherrybomb turbo muffler form canadian tire is a good cheap muffler that sounds good on 2.2's I have heard them personally it wont be stupid loud but obviously louder than stock, now it is cherrybomb brand but it's not one of those red glasspacks but it just looks like a normal muffler and you can just use whatever tailpipe you choose and you could just clamp it on and been up a stock muffler bracket to hang it. This would be the cheapest option and would look stock and not be obnoxiously loud
