Why wouldn't the trans shop hook up thier scanner and monitor the trans fluid temp sensor to make sure it is actually working? You could just have a bad tft sensor, but the fluid being dark and smelling burnt makes me wonder if it was overheated. When was the last trans service completed prior to having the shop pull the pan? And by "installing a fan" do you mean a trans cooler?
