Of course oil filter wrenches are best way to go. But in a pinch, the screwdriver/hammer method worked out fine for me. Perhaps I will not suggest it anymore because I see my faulty logic (holy filters don't get prayers answered very well). But if it does come down to it, it worked for the guy who recommended it to me and worked for me (all two times).
