Actually the name of the song is "Brand New Key" with a subtitle of "The Rollerskate Song"and it was sung by Melanie in 1971, a couple years after her performance at Woodstock.
I can see where in this instance one might think of Janis Joplin as the song kind of sounds like a variation of "Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz..."
