its called 'offset.' the smaller the positive offset, the more it will stick out of the fender.
on my p11, i use 45mm offset 17x7's. 215/45/17 tires. no rubbing.
you can fit 18's if you use the right offset. the circumference of the tire does not change that much because you will use smaller aspect ratio.
215/"45"/17 45 is the aspect ratio = 215x 0.45 = 96.75mm sidewall.
