When one pushes the clutch pedal down the sound will be usually worse than when the clutch pedal is released. Sometimes the bearing will make noise all the time but change depending on clutch position. If it's making any noise at all something is wrong, and usually the clutch pedal test is enough to convince a reasonable person there is a failure in this part. It's not to much of an issue to fix, but I usually have replaced all the clutch parts, when I've done this, so as to avoid going back into the bell housing any time soon. Have the flywheel turned, install a new pressure plate, slave cylinder, pilot bearing and the works. One on a budget might get away with leaving some of the old parts in place, but if one can afford to fix everything at once the work won't have to be repeated in 6 months or less.
