What comes to mine would be physical damage.....which often is not visible to a visual inspection.
Grasping the wire instead of the boot will damage the internal cable connection to the end connector......
Even with careful handling, they are not intended to be handled a lot, so many disconnect and reconnect cycles can damage them.
Heat breaks them down....
And some wires are better quality......able to take more physical handling and / or better insulation (often not connected to price or brand name).
