A blow-off valve is used on vehicles with forced-induction systems to regulate intake manifold pressure. The valve opens and vents air to the atmosphere (or back to the turbine inlet) when the manifold pressure exceeds a preset limit. BOVs that vent directly to atmosphere typically make a "whooosh," "psssshhht," or similar sound when they vent.
