It shouldn't cause a primary coil code, but the spark plug well gaskets are known to allow oil to leak into the plug wells and cause a misfire. I'd suggest you pull the spark plug boots and inspect for oil. If you find a well or two with plug wire boots that show signs of oil, you'll probably want to repair the leaks before spending money on a coil or ignition module. Of course, while you're there, you may as well check the spark plugs and replace them if they are due. It's possible, but not probable, that either of these could contribute to the code.
If both of these are fine, or they don't cause the code to go away, then you'll almost need an oscilloscope to backprobe the signals to and from the ignition control module (ICM) to see where the problem lies. The ICM supposedly is getting hard to find. I have one that I bought for my '93 SHO ATX before I sold it. I suspect the ICM for the ATX is the same as your '92 MTX. Let me know if you think you need it.
