A couple brake pad changes ago I used average brand pads and they squeaked for about 5000 miles (almost always). The next time I replaced pads I bought better quality ones and no chirping/squealing. I just replaced mine last weekend (new pads and rotors) and there's no squealing at all. One thing I've learned is that lower grade pads with good grade rotors will cause squealing. I also use apply anti-squeal (gooey liquid stuff) to the back of the pads as recommended by the manufacturer, and lube all parts (also as recommended). A good installation with good materials won't make noise.
The noise might drive you crazy, but if your brakes feel like they work, you're probably safe. Just check them every time you rotate tires.
