Thanks for your input. Hopefully I can get my dad to make those repairs.
My dad did buy a code reader. I didnt have the paper he wrote the codes on with me when I first posted, but I just ran out to the car and got it. The codes were:
P0304 (this one came up twice)
P1441 (this one came up twice, too)
P0452
