In most instances you'll get a better finish by airbrushing primer. But Tamiya primer works so nice that if you can find it, use it. Otherwise automotive primers will work, get the lacquer/sandable kind. You can spray that paint into a container and apply it w/an airbrush, though sometimes I've needed to add a universal retarder to the mix so the paint flows smoothly.

Use a primer color complementary to the final color. White works best for light colors and bright/warm-hue colors, such as white, yellow, orange, red. Use gray primer for blues, greens, purples, black. Some primers are available in black and red oxide, use black for really dark colors or black, and red oxide for maroon colors. Some people use a pink primer for bright reds, like Ferrari red. Your top color will be best if you use the correct primer.
