Try to see if there is any vacuum hoses popped off and sucking air...a big vacuum leak will cause idle stalling. May be the sound you hear. Look close around the throttle body and the brake booster supply hose. if you had any intake backfire while trying to start it, where it huffs back after an aborted start, this is common.

Otherwise, I'd say the idle memory is blown from having the battery go dead. This makes them stall and surge and act weird too. It will recover after being driven for a while if this is it.

If the alternator is dragging, you might be hearing the belt straining to cope with that. Why did the battery run down?
