Re: 1990 Camry acceleration problems

Vibration while at idle or just accelerating from a stop can be due to cold engine mounts. The 4-cyl Camrys have a rep for it, espeically in colder weather when the rubber mounts become less pliable...very noticeable at a stop and in gear. But after nearly 20 years, they may be shot. There are 4 mounts: 1) main front, 2) main rear, 3) transmission (driver's side wheel well), 4) a torque control "dog bone" strut on the top passenger side (attaches to strut tower).

Excessive vibration can also come from neglected ingition system: worn out spark plugs, crusty cap and rotor terminals.

Finally, rough engine can be due to a clogged or faulty positive crankcase ventilation (PCV), idle air control (IAC), or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves.
