The best radar detectors are:
Windshield mounted:
-Escort passport 8500x50
-Beltronics RX65
-Escort passport 9500ix (a 8500x50 with GPS technology)
-Beltronics STI
-Beltronics GX65 (a RX65 with GPS technology )

The X50 and the RX65 are basically the same radar detector but think of the X50 as a luxury car with all the bells and whistles and the RX65 as a muscle car. Some places radar detectors are illegal, for these places or professional drivers there is the Beltronics STI. It is one of the only radar detectors undetectable to the spectre 3 radar detector detector.

The only good radar detectors come from Escort and Beltronics, they are actually the same company. Lots of people like Cobra and Valentine, but the Cobra's have terrible range and the valentine has false alerts all of the time it drives you crazy!. If you are serious about detectors don't go cheap. Also don't waste your money on Rock Mountain Radar Jammers, they don't work! Plus radar jammers are illegal and a Federal offense.

Laser is a whole different bag of worms than Radar. It is near impossible to detect unless it hits your radar detector and by then it is to late and they have your speed. You need a laser jammer (not the same as a radar jammer and not illegal in most places).
