In the shop we used a chain cutter to lop the muffler off just ahead of the old joint, the new one's inlet is sized to go over the remaining pipe.
You might be able to rent a chain cutter at Autozone or something...works like an oil filter wrench but had a chain of cutting wheels instead of a strap. Takes about 30 seconds to cut one off....
