Today (12/27/08), the wipers started chattering in the normal "on" position, although it wasn't consistent. The problem did not occur at all when on the high speed setting. BTW, I never leave the wipers on when I turn off the truck. Am I stuck with replacing the wiper motor?

this is not a motor problem but a w/shield contamination problem...clean the windshield with a cotton cloth that has some lacquer thinner in it and carefully wipe down the glass only...you do this until the cloth does not discolor...this will remove oil film....then coat the wiper blades with silicone spray...
this should work...if not then the wiper arm may need to be bent so as to correct the blade angle sweep...
the other method is to flip the blades.../get better blades...most today only last 1 year..
