This sounds like the blower motor resistor. I haven't replaced the blower motor, but it's located up behind the glove box and I believe it's accessed from inside the car.

At one point in time I had problems with the blower motor and I researched how to remove it, but it turned out it was a piece of electrical tape inside the cage causing noise.

I remember reading a post where someone suggested removing the passenger seat and laying down to work up under the dash.
