Bill,
The bearing that wore out on mine was number 38 but that's the closest one to the left while facing the engine compartment. The bearing farthest to the right is number 4 which is a tapered roller. If my car were making the noises you describe I would pull the black metal cover and have a look. I don't think you can change the bearing from there but you could grab the end of the shaft and see if it is loose. Could probably also start the car with the cover removed and see if the shaft moves around.

My Transmission makes a loud "coffee grinder" sound when cold with the clutch pedal
out.
Seems to come from the right side of the Transmission facing the engine compartment.
The sound goes away when I press the pedal in - can't be the throwout bearing!
So...which numbered part (bearing) would wear out first or most to cause such
a noise?
I suppose it makes that same noise as I am driving, but the road noise covers it.
Does whatever bearing wear that causes this noise need to be a lot of wear?
...a lot of play in the bearing?
I am wondering how long I can get away w/o rebuilding the Transmission....
Someone on this Forum said you can drive the transmission even if it makes a
lot of hideous noise before anything actually breaks !
Funny that my throw-out bearing has outlasted the main Transmission bearings themselves!
It is cold out here in Spokane and winter comes...I don't want to fart with my
transmission until it REALLY, REALLY has to be done. I am too old now to
do it just for the grins of it...how long can I put it off?

PS - seems like every time I get a car REALLY fixed up nice, something happens
to it. DEER - Fender Bender - Totaled - something!
