'Service Engine Soon' Warning light

Hello:
I have been member of this forum for couple of years now.
Had a share of problems with the transsmission on my Buick Century 2000.
Had to have the trans rebuilt at very low milege on the clock (around 50.000 km). Our terchnical advisors here are well familiar with my 'case'.
The car has now 90.000 km.
So far, (I have to touch the wood), runs OK. I am really concerned that all that problem with dexcool, faulty transmissions will eventually show up on my car as well. Too bad. Century is very comfortable car. Not unlike my former car which was mercedes 300D.
Last couple of days the warning light 'Service Engine Soon' came up and stayed on for two days. Yesterday it vent back to normal. (Warning gone).
I asked technician at our college where I work about it and he mentioned that I should check that the gas cup is tightly screwed on. It was not.
Since the light was already off, I could not tell whether the loose cap was the reason for the warning 'Service Engine Soon' to light up.
This is just a little tip for you guys, who may experience same issue.
