A growling noise is classically a low level on the power steering reservoir. Good news is if you fill it back up there is no permanent damage. If you wait too long and the pump runs without oil for long enough.....usually it doesn't kill the pump outright but you will have the growling forevermore.
Be wary of power steering leaks....the oil under medium pressure can atomize quickly and hot hydraulic oil (ps fluid plus also trans fluid) gets flammable quickly when in contact with hot manifolds. Ironically more flammable than gasoline IMHO as the gasoline simply flashes into vapor and needs some sort of an ignition source before it will flame. Engine oil weepage on the other hand tends to smoke but rarely propagate past that. An exception would be a conrod thrown thru the side of the engine block
