You may want to search the forum specific to the Grand Am to learn if this is a common issue on them. I'm not sure if your Grand Am has some sort of door module or body control module that the power window switches run through to control the windows.

Does the passenger window work all the time from the switch on that door, just not from the driver's door, or do neither of the switches work it reliably?

I don't see how cycling the ignition switch would have any effect on a bad window motor which is why I suspect there's a body or door module somewhere in the circuit.
