I think it really all boils down to personal preference, and building style. Something like this will work amazingly well for some people, and not at all for others. I'd suggest getting one of the smaller cheap ones to start w/, and see if its something you can work comfortably with, and if it does, then if needed, get one of hte larger ones.

I think also a lot depends on what your building. I could be wrong, but for what most automobile models use, a smaller one would be good. However, if you do any armor or aircraft modeling, then a larger one may come in handy.
