Mine did the same thing. I found one in a wrecking yard for $5. I still have the old one, so I'd be interested in a fix also.
On mine the yellow would light up when it was in use, just not the light that shows what it was.

Mine is a 1997. It only has 4 different fan settings (very lame). A friends 2000 has 16-18 (lost count). I like that one better. I also wonder if I could hook up a 2000 in a 97. They look the same from the front.
