Not true. You can blow a block a part by running too rich or too lean. That's what it looks like there. The rod was melted and the piston went up/down and did the damage. Then parts floating around in the cylinder at such a high rpm will throw the pieces where ever and do the damage.
I'm guessing he put the cam there when he took the head off.
