CV Joint/Ball Joint (?) 1996 Cavalier
I was wondering if someone could help me diagnose a problem with my 1996 Cavalier and if it's worth fixing. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I bought the Cavalier from Hell in March and have had nothing but problem after problem with it. It's a NY car so there is a substantial amount of rust underneath. I'd been hearing a whirring noise when accelerating/decelerating over the past month which has become progressively worse and the other day, when I let go of the wheel, the wheel would jerk slightly back and forth, as if one of the tires were loose. I checked and all 4 tires seemed to be on nice and tight. The next day, as I was driving to the store, the car started occasionally jerking to the left and right and making this God awful metallic grinding noise. It freaked me out so I made my boyfriend drive it home and on the way, the noise got progressively worse and it sounded like metal parts were breaking off left and right, the car began vibrating under my feet in the passenger floorboard, there were loud clunking noises, and it became a fight to keep it on the road even doing 5mph. Finally, at home and parked, we looked and the front passenger wheel was no longer vertical, but slightly tilted in. At my boyfriend's suggestion, to see if it was the CV joint (?), he tried wiggling the tire, but it wouldn't budge. My father looked underneath and said the CV joints looked like they were new so I am now at a loss as to what the problem could be. If it were a broken ball joint, would it behave this way?
I would greatly appreciate ANY feedback I could get!
Thank you!!!
