As previously mentioned in my post concerning a misfire problem (

Apparently when it rains, it pours in Alero-land.
Not long after the Service Engine Soon light appeared, I was met with two other indicator lights. These were the ABS light and the BRAKE light. No traction control related lights appeared, and I still am able to use cruise control.
I checked the ABS related fuses, brake fluid level, and the rear wheel speed sensors and all appeared to be satisfactory. I took the vehicle to the dealership where they found they were unable to communicate to the ABS module. Eventually they traced the wiring harnesses back to the Electronic Brake and Traction Control Unit (EBTCM) checking continuity. The short was discovered in the EBTCM itself and the quoted cost to replace this is $1079.62.
Has anyone replaced this unit before? Is it difficult to access? Where can I purchase this? If I pull it from a junkyard (or have it pulled), are there things I should look out for? It seems like I can either have a module with or without something called variable steering. Not sure what that is and hope that someone can elaborate more and possibly tell me how to determine which module I have.
I'm pretty much open to suggestions at this point. Between this and the previously mentioned fuel injector issue I'm not quite sure if I should be investing in the car or if I should call it quits. I don't mind tinkering on the car as long as I can get the parts at the right price. Let me know what you guys think.
