I can't imagine the fuel pump causing major damage. Did you mean the oil pump? If you're going to fix it up and you did mean the fuel pump, you'll need a new one either way. If it was the fuel pump, try replacing it first and see how it performs. Check to see if the temperature is normal. Check the spark plugs to see if there are any unusual deposits.
If the engine is shot, check with a few non-chain repair shops. I got a newly rebuilt small block for $200 that the owner of the shop fixed up, then didn't need. If you rebuild your engine, make sure you take the engine to a machine shop first to be sure that there isn't anything too severe. In my case, my sister ran the car without oil and the block and crank shaft were worn beyond specification. The number one cylinder and pistons were damaged as well. The small block was by far my best choice and I would have gone that route even if I hadn't gotten such a good deal.
