Actualy it was a combo of bad engineering. The plastic gaskets are superior to older gaskets until combined with Dex-Cool coolant. One change good, the other bad. There is a class action settlement to pay for gasket replacement cost: http://www.dexcoolsettlement.com/ but watch out for the "catches", especialy when you bought the vehicle and how long you owned it. In the case of my Pontiac, I missed the mark because I bought it used and owned it one month short of the ownership requirement clause. Damn the lawyers, they made millions on this one and managed to exclude me.
