Unhappy CamShaft sensor code

A couple of weeks ago my check engine light came on, I had the codes read. 1) camshaft sensor 2) lean fuel mixture. I went straight to my preferred auto supply bought a camshaft sensor installed it, disconnected the neg side of battery for 5 mins. GREAT the code reset. 25 miles later the check engine light came back on. I then took it to a garage for repair, they called me and told me that they had decided that it had either jumped timing or some plate (starts with an "F") had broken. Either way they would charge me a minimum of $300.00 to start looking for the problem because they said it meant going into the camshafts. How do they know it's not a bad plug or a wire. The car has NOT jumped time. The idle is off some probably due to the cam related problem I imagine the cam is making the engine run lean also. "Flex" plate is what the mechanic said was a possibility of being broken.
