Starts but won't stay running. My brother has tried changing fuel filter, has checked exhaust etc.

It was running fine when i heard a noise and thought tire blown. I pulled off and when i parked it died. You could start it but it won't stay running. As soon as you shift into another gear it dies. We are at a lost to where to go from here.
