I was having a toss-up between Civic Si and 2000 Maxima in the summer of 1999. While I got neither, I went for the Si's close cousin, the Integra GS-R. The main reasons? Handling. The Maxima is a huge car, and it drives bigger than its competition, the Camry and Accord. While its engine is without equal, the rest of the car, even the SE, simply can not deliver the sporting performance that you will get from an ITR. This goes back to the difference between the terms "sports car" and "sports sedan."
If you are serious about performance (to a degree higher than that offered by the Maxima) in curves and non-striaght line settings, there is really no comparison. Convince yourself: test drive both, and see if you prefer the size and power of the Maxima or the agility and quickness of the ITR (and of course remember that the ITR is tunable for much more power, while your handling options are limited in the Maxima). Besides, you can always get yourself a Civic sedan anywhere from 1992 to 2001 and simply bolt a Type R engine and drivetrain into it. Do not be intimidated by the all-mighty engine swap, it is a great idea. AND you can wait a while, I suggest at least waiting until the RSX Type R's release to see what Honda brings to the table. Besides, dealers should be trying to clear out the 2001 ITR's that are left at that point and you should be able to save some.. if they are not already sold at that point.
