I have this major problem that no mechanic has been able to give me a 100% response on. I have no power when pushing the gas pedal. I have to sometimes floor the pedal in order to obtain take off. ITS EXTEMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE THIS WAY!!! The car will take off when it hits around 2000-3000 rpm. When I am stopped at a stop sign, red light, etc then the car idles rough and wants to stall. I'm not sure as of yet whether this problem is worse or not when the engine is cool or warm? Sometimes I can drive just fine without this problem occuring HOWEVER 80% of the time it occurs. The spark plugs and fuel filter have been changed, the battery is knew and is fully charged, the air filter is new, the manifold has been cleaned (was not too dirty), there is a sensor located between the manifold and the casing for the air filter (on the air flow tubing) and this sensor is also brand new. I received a check engine code saying that one of my coolant system sensors needs to be changed HOWEVER I doubt that this sensor has anything to do with this problem I am experiencing?

WHAT IS GOING ON HERE???

I was told by my mechanic that it is the sensor on the manifold. (I forgot the name of the sensor) It is the sensor that measures the carbon and so on. It is located on the manifold right underneath the valve. It has two little holes in it which is connected to two holes underneath the valve. He told me that it was this sensor that was causing my car not to have any power when pushing down on the gas and why my car wants to stall. Before I spend $300.00 on this sensor I need to know FOR SURE that there are not any other possibilities that could be causing this problem? Usually my car shakes when the engine gets warm and when the shaking starts it seems to make the problem much worse!

I cleaned the interior of this sensor with intake cleaner and my car worked well for the first ride I took her out on BUT then afterwards the problem started up ONCE AGAIN.

Question, if it really was this sensor then wouldn't it only be logical that I would have received a check engine light for this???

Anyone have any advice? Thanks

I heard that there was a recall concerning the 99 Sonata stalling on people. Apparently there have been a lot of reported accidents due to 99 Sonata's that have stalled on people while driving.
And how do recalls works with people who bought an old car??? I am assuming that these recalls are not respected for second hand car owners???

Any ways... some help on this problem would be appreciated, thanks.
Are you referring to the oxygen sensor? It's on the exhaust manifold. There are 4 on your car though, and if one or more of those were bad, it should throw a code. The recall you might be referring to is one on the mass air flow wiring. This could cause a low rpm stall. There are several different fixes depending on production dates. If you can get me your VIN, I can tell you if you have any open recalls. These Hyundai's can be tricky, and a lot of smaller shops don't have a clue about them. Might be best if you take it to the dealer since they are the ones most familiar with your car before you spend a fortune on stuff that won't fix your concern.
