ok we have a 96 camry and if it is sitting and idleing it never goes above half!! but when were driving down the road the gauge will go up to just under the red and if you slow down and then step on the gas again the temp will go down and then come up! once the temp reaches normal the coolin fan comes on and stays on untill it is till its under half on the gauge. Also the lower radaitor hose is cold / nuckwarm and does not seem as the thermo stats opening..... i have put to thermo stats in it and then we took it to the shop and they said it was the water pump... took it home and tore it down and the timing belt was loose and worn and the pump seem fine and almost new... put new water pump and time belt on it and still doing it has a new cap!!! has anyone had this issue??? oh also it has great heat !!! ok well thanks i hope to get some help with this
