You are on the right track. Take the belt off and try feeling all of the pulleys for a rough or loose bearing. Also look hard for something out of line. I replaced a tensioner a while back and it started shredding belts with the new one. It turned out to be a defective tensioner. I expected a lot of problems with the dealer but they just swapped it out. I was still out the labor for doing it twice.
