the smell is most likley the caliper hanging up/frozen on. this would need rebuilding or replacement.
Pads are made so strong nowdays that they accually eat the drums and rotors away. The old asbestos pads wouldnt do this.
That is the reason for the (Lifetime brake job).
Pads and shoes are cheep so they get you for rotors, drums and labor.
As a ruel of thumb. pads are good for 100,000 and the rears 200,000, two to one.
So in theroy, you would do a front brake job then when the fronts are ready again it is time to do the backs.
That sticking caliper will cause the new pad to eat away at the new rotor so I would get that taken care of.
It is nice to hear that your selling the vehical and installlng the new brakes for the next guy.
Not to many people do that any more.
