Heater Hose Quick Connect 97 V6

Figure I can't be the first to deal with this but can't find anything in search so here goes:

97 Firebird w/ V6 uses a (proprietary?) plastic covered quick connect where heater hoses connect to engine. We need to replace the quick connect (hose itself is just fine.) No NAPA alternative, OEM sells only full hose, by the pair at $150....

<rant>So who needs to quickly disconnect your heater hose? Only the vehicle assembly line, best I can figure. What in the heck is wrong with a worm clamp? Guess gm wants to make money on the replacement parts...</rant>

How have you experts solved the problem? Anyone know if there are other gm vehicles using this design? I'd be happy to cut an old hose and splice it simply to be able to use its quick connect coupler.

Thanks in advance,
Mike
