Mugen Integra Type R appears at Auto Gallery 2001

Honda's world famous tuning arm Mugen had a surprise exhibit at the recent Auto Gallery in Tokyo "a Mugen tuned Integra Type R." In addition to the revised wheels, rear wing, bonnet and suspension, a roll cage and special aeroparts have also been fitted. The intake and exhaust systems have also been modified while the ECU has been tweaked.

And this model is not just for show. You can expect to see it on the market by year's end. But according to Mugen's Jun Hirota, "the i-VTEC modification to the engine has made the ECU setting much harder. Up until now, we have gota away with just one map to control the ECU, but now, with the cam twist control, 10 different map settings became necessary."

Made from a carbon and FRP composite, the bonnet tips the scales at less than 2/3 the weight of the original. It can be opened with one finger.

As can be expected, buyers should be prepared to part with around 1 million yen for these racing upgrades, but Mugen say that all is not lost for those wanting to do it bit by bit. Mugen are ready to discuss partial upgrades too.

1 million yen =~$10K US

I really like the hood.
