You didn't mention the model year, but I am assuming pre-2000. On my 1999 model there are only the two screws hiding behind the plugs you mention. There is a flexible gasket material that provides for sealing the tailight unit to the body and this must be gently broken loose. I have found that on my rig it is easiest to allow it to sit in the sun for about 2 hours and then gently wiggle the unit and it will pop out.

You didn't ask, but my hint would be to be sure to use a magnetic screw driver when reinstalling - - once dropped into the cavity those screws are very difficult to retrieve.
