Hate to say it, but I really could hardly agree with you more. It seems that the age old lesson to be learned is that in life, you generally date for speed, and marry for comfort. When it is time to settle down, in most cases you end up with the girl who is straight in the head, not the gorgeous girl who has issues. It's so sad but often true. There are exceptions, but they are often not common.

As for how ladies can fix their predicament? The jury is still out on that one. Not that I'm the all knowing be-all end-all on the topic (few things could be farther from the truth), but I'll see if I can come up with some theories here.
