before you go out and buy a new transmission got and replace your shifter bushings if they are original from the car and have alot of play in them that may account for the grinding. I know when I replaced mine (when I put in the B&M shifter) It made a world of difference nice clean crisp shifts and the grinding I would get occasionaly in 2nd and 3rd were gone.
the bushings are like 10$ and they are relatively easy to put in.
