I thought I should post this finished build before Ferrari's 60th anniversary year is over. This post also covers 50% of the models I have finished this year...
This model is build from Rosso kit, which is quite Fujimi-like ie. even though the parts look good there are quite many small adjustments needed when building the kit. Anyway the finished model looks good and captures 512tr's looks very well.
The parts that needed attention in the body were the side panels behind the door slit strakes and front lights. The side panels would have left a visible seam if I had built them the way the instructions told, so I had to make some adjustments to make the seam go away before painting the body. The pop up lamps were supplied as separate parts for some reason and these did not fit without filing, puttying and rescribing the lines around the lamps. The body was primered in white and painted with Tamiya TS-8 Italian red, which was polished with Micromesh polishing cloths and finished with Novus plastic polish.
The underbody wheel wells needed extensions because otherwise there would have been a large gap between the body and the wheel well. I made the extensions with plastic card.
The interior is finished with a mix of Tamiya desert yellow and flat white acrylics. The floor mats are Model Factory Hiro's tan carpet material and the Ferrari logo on the steering wheel is also from MFH. The gear shifter is a metal pin and the seat belts are made from masking tape and the buckles are photo etched parts. Door lock pins were made from streched sprue.
Other details include photo etched wiper blades from Modeler's (unfortunately they look a bit short especially on the driver's side) and some metal mesh under the engine hatch louvers. The Ferrari emblem on the front bonnet is from MFH and chromed Ferrari and Pininfarina logos are from Crazy Modeler's set. Reflectors on rear lights and front turn indicators are pieces of cigarette packet foil painted with clear orange and red. Side indicators are pieces of streched clear sprue painted with clear orange. The wheels were stripped from the chrome plating and painted with Alclad 2 white aluminium. Alclad paints were also used with the exhaust and the exhaust tips were replaced with lengths of polished aluminium tube. Side windows are made of clear plastic sheet because the kit part was too thick and distorted the view to the interior.
All sounds very simple when told but I had to put many hours for this build. Maybe my skills are getting rusty, but I felt that for every step forward I got 0.5 steps back... I had to do many things two times just to correct errors and mistakes I made earlier and that meant the whole project took much longer than necessary. For example the body was polished and painted two times because I polished through the red paint to the primer on the first time etc. The model may not be compeletely worth the hours I invested in it but I am happy it is finally finished anyway.
