I don't feed my engine a steady diet of it due to the hassle involved, but on the occasional trip, I'll add it. Without a doubt it improves fuel mileage, and cleans EGR passages and the like, but as for performance ...never noticed any difference

You may be right. Many people try to tell me that I need to run “high octane” gas in my 1950 GM truck, but it's not actually the octane but the vaporization rate of the fuel being used. Check this out:

The vaporization rate of gasoline was higher in the days before it became more scarce and other byproducts such as acetone were distilled out of it but reintroducing a large range of hydrocarbons may actually defeat the design of modern engines despite their short term advantages, and by the way, increased mileage is increased perfomance.
