If either were bad wouldn't you see white smoke out the tail or cross contamination of fluids or missing antifreeze. I suspect the owner did something but carfax doesn't show any maintenance records.

3.1 are good for intake gasket. the intake gasket is the top gasket at the intake.. if you ever replaced head gaskets you had to remove the intake, to do the job right..when it stats leaking coolant into the oil..
