Sounds like a switch problem. Had the same situation in a Mercury my wife owned. Found replacement switches at a salvage yard and replaced BOTH SIDE switches. Just because it is driver side does not mean that the problem is not on the passenger side switch. It is a two-way switch and overrides the operation of each switch. Possibility you can find wiring diagram somewhere and jump the switch over to rule out motor problem. Whatever you cover the window with, keep safety in mind, something you can see out of.
