Re: Install Cam shaft

Some cams are plug and play some are not. The center line of the lobe is not always right on with aftermarket camshafts. For example, I believe it is like 4 degrees off on the HKS cams and they need to be "degreed" whereas its right on with my FP 2 cams. This is why people need adjustable cam gears. Another thing is the agressiveness of the cam. Some dont need valve springs and retainers, some do. Also, if you are going agressive enough, some cams have so much lift that you need special valve seals.

As for picking which ones, the first thing I would look at is A) how much power you want and B) what your budget is. Also, engine displacement is something that needs to be taken into consideration. A given camshaft, say an HKS 272, is sort of "milded out" when it gets into a stroker or 2.4 motor.

In my personal opinion, HKS 264 or equivilent cams are wasted money. If you are going to go through the trouble of getting cams, I would personally go with a set of 272's for a 2.0L for a street or street/strip setup and I would for sure go atleast 280's on a track only car. The FP 2's (aka Comp 101200's) are similar to HKS 272 cams, but the FP's have a bit more top end and are only $430 a set straight from FP, I think I got mine of eBay for like $350 compared to the HKS cams that are $350 per cam. If you had a stroker or a 2.4, in my opinion you should have atleast 272's preferably 280's for a street/strip car and if you were crazy and had a track only car you can get some fuckin 288's. It should also be noted that FP has the X version of each of its cams which is made specifically for the 100mm stroke engines.

Build on hold until I get a good paying job, either in school or once I get out. At that time a full tear down and complete rebuild should be in order.
