2g 5spd gst and 2g auto gst

hey guys, i've been a little busy with the new member of the family and work so i cant post on here that often anymore, but i need some help right now.

Here is few details on what happend to my gst and what i plan on doing.
Last month i went to the track and made a few passes, i managed to get e best of 14.3 and about 3 runs i did 14.4, then at the end of the day my tranny broke.
I dont know exactly what happened because i havent pulled the tranny yet, but there's a whole in the casing, kinda by the starter. The car drives fine and i made home from the track with the messed up tranny(80 miles at about 65mph)

i've been looking all over ebay and cant find FWD trannies, so i started looking at race built tranny, but i dont see that happening in the near future.

Then today i started looking on craigslist for a tranny and i found a 95 gst(same a mine) really nice body and only one small dent on the pasenger side, but he said it needs new engine.
So what i was think is try to talk him to lower the price a little, and use the engine on gst, since the tranny is messed up, but i'm not sure if the 5spd engines and auto engines are exactly the same, i know this might sound stupid but do you guys think this will work? a 95 gst 5spd engine on a 95gst auto? i tried to search but didnt find anything useful.
