Dude, its not that hard. Go to the "Problem Diagnosis" sub forum (which the thread starter should have by the way) and look for the "New Thread" button.
As far as your problem, if you suspected a shift linkage why didnt you just check? Thats what I am putting my money on, I think if something grenaded inside you would have NO first gear period. Check/adjust your shit and give her another check.
Oh second thought, might be a fucked slave cylinder. Does it just need a couple pumps before you can engage it?
