I believe Autozone will hook your car up for free and retrive the code from the computer and tell you what it means.
Getting the code is the first thing to do that way you have some knowledge as to why the light is on.
Mine came on for a bad A.I.R. Pump. They wanted $500 for the repair. On the forum I found a enough information that all it needed was a hole made in the cover of the pump to allow water to drain out.
Light never came on again.
You can even by an inexpensive code reader (not cheap by quality just number of features) for less then $50 plug it up under the dash where the connector is and do it yourself. It may be worth it as opposed to paying the same to a mechanic.
All you need is the number of the code. You can look up the defination online. Then you'll have your own scanner / reader and it will work on just about any car built on or after 1996.
