Yes, dish soap is too strong, it will remove any wax on the car and you usually want to have at least 1 coating of wax. All soaps advertised as being for cars will be gentle enough not to strip wax remaining from your last wax job. I haven't heard of any differences between brands, though many companies want you to use their soap if you use their other products.
